Physiotherapy, or “Physical Therapy”, (the terms mean the same thing) is a health care profession for the prevention or treatment of injury or disease through physical means. Its goal is to enhance your life through improved health and fitness. Physiotherapists teach you techniques for recovery, pain relief, injury prevention and improved physical movement. We encourage you to participate actively in your program to achieve maximum benefit.

Who is a Physiotherapist?

A Physiotherapist has a University Degree and must be licensed to practice by the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario. They have a detailed understanding of how the body works and are specifically educated to assess and improve movement and function, and relieve pain. Physiotherapists use a comprehensive approach to health care: they evaluate your physical needs and abilities, and then develop a personalized program to help you achieve your goals. At Burlington Sports and Spine Clinic you do NOT need a referral from a doctor to be assessed and treated by a Physiotherapist; however your health insurance provider may require a referral in order to get reimbursed.

When can a Physiotherapist help?

You should see a Physiotherapist when your physical movement is impaired. Reasons vary: back, head or neck pain; other joint or muscle pain, weakness, stiffness, swelling or tingling. Whether you have had a recent trauma or long-time nagging pain or injury, Burlington Sports and Spine Physiotherapy can help you understand your injury and provide a comprehensive treatment game plan. Whether you are an elite athlete or the average Joe, we can help you reduce your pain, improve your function and performance, and return you back to activities of daily living.

What does Physiotherapy do?

A Physiotherapist will begin by performing a complete physical assessment and evaluation. This will include taking a personal health history to help determine what you hope to achieve, and setting treatment goals. Then the Physiotherapist will develop a treatment plan using a wide range of treatment techniques to improve range of motion, strength, function and to relieve pain.

Pain and injuries are not all the same, therefore, at Burlington Sports and Spine Clinic; treatment plans are not the same and we don’t have a “cookie-cutter” approach. We use a variety of evidence-based and modern techniques to develop a customized treatment plan that is tailored to your personal needs. Do I need a Referral?
Is Physiotherapy in Burlington Covered?

You do NOT need a referral from your Medical Doctor to receive an assessment or treatment from a Physiotherapist. However, some extended health benefit (EHB) plans require a MD referral in order for you to claim physiotherapy and receive your insurance reimbursement.
